Borax, an inorganic compound, generally written Na2B4O7·10H2O, with a molecular weight of 381.37. The actual structure is Na2[B4O5(OH)4]·8H2O.  Borax is a very important boron-containing mineral and boron compound. Usually a white powder containing colorless crystals, easily soluble in water. Borax has a wide range of uses, can be used as cleaning agents, cosmetics, insecticides, can also be used in the preparation of buffer solutions and other boron compounds.  Borax is highly toxic and is banned as a food additive in many countries around the world.
