Propionic acid is a three carbon carboxylic acid with the chemical formula ch3ch2cooh. Pure propionic acid is a colorless, corrosive liquid with pungent smell. Some cereals and oil crops in China are mildewed every year. The solution is to add preservatives. At present, benzoic acid, sorbic acid, propionic acid and their salts are widely used as food preservatives.
