Dimethyl carbonate, referred to as DMC, is a colorless transparent liquid at room temperature with pungent odor, relative density (d204) is 1.0694, melting point 4ºC boiling point 90.3ºC, flash point 21.7ºC (open) 16.7ºC (closed), refractive index (nd20Chemicalbook)1.3687, flammable and non-toxic. It can be mixed with almost all organic solvents in any proportion, and slightly soluble in water. It can be used as a methylation reagent. Dimethyl carbonate is less toxic than other methylation agents, such as iodomethane and dimethyl sulfate, and is biodegradable.

Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) has a unique molecular structure (CH3O-CO-OCH3), and its molecular structure contains carbonyl, methyl, methoxy and carbonyl methoxy, so it can be widely used in organic synthesis reactions such as carbonylation, methylation, methoxy and carbonyl methylation, and has a very wide range of uses. It is mainly used as carbonylation and methylation reagents, gasoline additives, and raw materials for synthesizing polycarbonate (PC). The large-scale production of DMC was developed along with the non-phosgene synthesis process of polycarbonate. Its uses are as follows:
1. A new type of low-toxic solvent can replace xylene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate or butyl ketone and other solvents in the paint and adhesive industry, which is an environmentally friendly green chemical product.
2. Good methylating agent, carbonylation agent, hydroxymethylating agent and methoxylation agent are widely used in food antioxidant, plant protection agent and other fields, and are a widely used chemical raw materials.
3. Phosgene, dimethyl sulfate, methyl chloroformate and other serious drugs are ideal substitutes.
4. Synthesis of polycarbonate, diphenyl carbonate, isocyanate, etc.
5. In medicine, it is used to synthesize anti-infective drugs, antipyretic and analgesic drugs, vitamins and central nervous system drugs.
6. Pesticides are mainly used in the production of methyl isocyanate, and then the production of some carbamate drugs, pesticides (anisole).
