Dl-tartaric acid is a colorless and transparent prismatic crystal, or a white fine to coarse crystalline powder. It has an aroma similar to that of grapes and white lemons. It tastes sour. Stable in the air. Non-hygroscopic. The acidity is approximately 1.2 to 1.3 times that of citric acid. It is readily soluble in water but insoluble in chloroform.
