Isophorone diisocyanate IPDI
Characteristic alicyclic diisocyanate monomer.
For the production of polyisocyanates and polyurethanes.
Isophorone diisocyanate IPDI is a colorless or light yellow liquid with a camphorlike odor. It is completely miscible with organic solvents such as esters, ketones, ethers, aromatic hydrocarbons and aliphatic hydrocarbons. The typical physical properties of IPDI are shown in the table.
PDI is an aliphatic isocyanate, and isophorone diisocyanate IPDI is also a cyclic aliphatic isocyanate. Isophorone diisocyanate IPDI is less reactive than aromatic isocyanates and has a lower vapor pressure. The reactivity of the two NCO groups in isophorone diisocyanate IPDI molecule is different, because the primary NCO in IPDI molecule is steric hindered by cyclohexane ring and A-substituted methyl group, and the reactivity of secondary NCO group attached to cyclohexane is 1.3-2.5 times higher than that of primary NCO. IPDI reacts with hydroxyl groups 4-5 times faster than HDI reacts with hydroxyl groups.
Application: Phorone diisocyanate IPDI is generally used to manufacture high-grade polyurethane resins such as light and weather resistant polyurethane coatings, wear-resistant hydrolytic polyurethane elastomers, and IPDI can also be used to manufacture non-yellowing microporous polyurethane foam
