Pure mercaptoacetic acid is a colorless and transparent liquid, while industrial products are colorless to slightly yellow and have a strong pungent odor. It is miscible with water, ethanol and ether. Hair perming products use mercaptoacetic acid to break some disulfide bonds in the hair to change the degree of hair curvature, thereby achieving the effect of perming and hair care.

3.TGA possesses both the reaction characteristics of hydroxy acids and thiol groups, among which the most significant reaction is the one with disulfides. Especially under alkaline conditions, it reacts with cystine in hair, breaks the (-S-S-) bond of cystine, and generates cysteine that is prone to curling. It is mainly used as a hair curling agent, hair removal agent, low-toxicity or non-toxic stabilizer for polyvinyl chloride, initiator, accelerator and chain transfer agent for polymerization reactions, and metal surface treatment agent. In addition, mercaptoacetic acid is a sensitive reagent for the determination of iron, molybdenum, aluminium, tin, etc. It can also be used as a crystallization nucleating agent during the processing and molding of polypropylene, as well as a modifier for coatings and fibers, and a fast-acting agent for blankets.
4 is an intermediate for the production of usp products such as propylproline (capptolide), biotin, zincic acid, and sodium disulfide succinate, and it is also an important raw material for the synthesis of cysteine, hormones, industrial disinfectants, and sulfuric acid.
5-mercaptoacetic acid, in addition to being used as an intermediate for Cefivitril, is also widely employed as a hair curling agent, hair removal agent, low-toxicity or non-toxic stabilizer for PVC, metal surface treatment agent, and initiator, accelerator and chain transfer agent in polymerization reactions
