When exposed to water or inorganic acids, it decomposes into hypochlorous acid. Hypochlorous acid has strong oxidizing, bleaching and bactericidal properties. Therefore, the bleaching effect of Calcium hypochlorite is mainly based on the oxidizing property of hypochlorous acid.
